Abe was born on April 29, 1924, in Tokyo. He was brought up in Yamaguchi, the prefecture where his father was born and raised. He was the oldest’s son of Kan Abe, a politician, and parliamentarian. His mother was a daughter of an army commander.
He was a leading member of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party. He served as foreign minister from 1982 to 1986. In 1951, Abe wed Yoko Kishi, a child of Prime Minister Nobusuke Kishi.
He was the father of former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. Nobuo, his third child won the historic House of Representatives seat held by Nobusuke Kishi in 2012 and was named defense minister in 2020.

In January of 1991, Shintaro Abe was hospitalized at Tokyo’s Juntendo University Hospital after experiencing some discomfort. He passed away on May 15, 1991, from heart failure. The Yamaguchi-born politician died at the age of 67 and was survived by his wife Yoko and his children Hironobu Abe and Shinzō Abe.
