American jazz pianist, keyboardist, bandleader, composer, and sporadic actor Herbert Jeffrey Hancock was born on April 12, 1940. Along with trumpeter Donald Byrd’s band, Hancock launched his career.
Soon after, he became a member of the Miles Davis Quintet, where he played an important role in developing the post-bop sound and redefined the function of a jazz rhythm section. He may have released his most well-known and influential album, Head Hunters, during the seventies.

Wayman E. Hancock passed away peacefully in a South Holland nursing home on Monday, June 4, 2001. He was 90 years of age at the time of his death and died after suffering a short illness.
Mr. Hancock left behind his wife, son, and daughter in addition to a son named Wayman Jr., a brother named Gilbert, a sister named Ann Johnson, seven grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. The Vernon Park Church of God, located at S. Stony Island Ave. in Chicago, held his memorial service.
