The main capital of Benue, Makurdi, is a township where Francis Dooga, a 72-year-old retired soldier, is accused of committing suicide.

The deceased, however, allegedly hanged himself on a tree in his residence right opposite the Roman Catholic church known as St. Joseph, a suburb of Makurdi, at about 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 8, 2024.

Meanwhile, a neighbor who happened to speak on a condition of anonymity has explained that the deceased, thus Dooga, who is popularly known as an “old soldier,” took the drastic action while members of his family were away from home at that moment.

However, it was noted that some other residents in the same area alleged that the old soldier always complains about hardship in life and sometimes wishes to end his life due to that. Sometimes too, what to eat and how to take care of oneself are problems, and always thinking leads to depression.

It was also gathered that the deceased had also complained about one of his children always withdrawing his pension funds on arrival, which is also leading to lots of thoughts within him.

In addition, he furthered his complaint with lots of other complaints, including not getting his full pension money from the pension board.

It was noted that before he committed suicide, he was also noted to be complaining about his security department allowance, which was given by the Federal Government to the defense headquarters, which was in turn released to the military personnel board.
