The loss of loved ones, especially a spouse, brings so much grief, but to say Marie-Claire Rupio, wife of late Ghanaian footballer Christian Atsu, is devasted is an understatement.
Even though Christian Atsu shielded his lovely family from the press, he didn’t hide them from his fans on social media, especially Instagram.
Once in a while, he would share family moments and birthday posts on his official Instagram page. Marie, on the other hand, has put her Instagram page on private but often shares photos of Atsu and her children.
Christian and Marie have been together for years and share three adorable children; Joseph Christian, Godwin Christian and Abigail Christian.
They lived a happy life until tragedy struck Atsu while on duty in Türkiye. He died in February 2023, after an earthquake in Antakya, Türkiye.
A state funeral was held in his honour on Friday, March 17, 2023, at the forecourt of the State House in Accra.
In her tribute, Marie said she, “knew little that morning that God is going to call you home. In life, I love you dearly. In death, I do the same. It breaks my heart to lose you.”
“You did not go alone. For part of me went with you. Your love is still my guide, and though I cannot see you, you are always on my side.”
“You were always so full of life. You seemed to be immortal. Your smile, your love. I see you in our children’s smiles. You are never really gone as part of you is within them.”
“You are loved beyond words and missed beyond measure. But as you always say; God wins,” she concluded.
She couldn’t even read her tribute by herself as she was completely devasted by the death of her husband.
Marie-Claire Rupio is a professional dancer, singer and author. Her latest published work is titled “Stop Bullying Me.”
