Native American stand-up comedian Charles Allan Hill was a member of the Oneida Nation of Wisconsin and lived from July 6, 1951, until December 30, 2013.

He contributed writing to the Roseanne TV series. The First Native American stand-up comedian to appear on television.

In 1970s, Hill managed to book a gig at Hollywood’s renowned Comedy Store, a testing ground for major network TV. There, he quickly made friends with some of the greatest humorists of the day.

Hill, who had gained notoriety at the age of 26, had a unique opportunity to make a significant appearance on The Richard Pryor Show in 1977. For Hill and all Native Americans who were watching someone on TV who oddly resembled them, this was a crucial moment.

The show’s essayists did ask Hill to portray a derogatory assumption about Native Americans, which he declined to do. He believed that any professional potential was secondary to his duty to combat the spread of bigoted preconceptions.
