The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has confirmed receiving a petition from the Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, concerning the controversial $34.9 million ambulance spare parts deal approved by former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta.

In a press statement signed by the Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng, it was revealed that an investigation will be initiated into the matter if it falls within the mandate of the office.

The petition was prompted by Mr. Ablakwa’s allegations that the deal was hastily approved by the Finance Minister just days before his departure from office. He raised concerns about the legitimacy of the beneficiary company, Service Ghana Auto Group Limited, which was incorporated a year after the ambulances were commissioned in 2019.

Mr. Ablakwa expressed surprise that despite serious findings against the company by the Auditor-General, the government proceeded to engage them in the procurement deal.

The MP revealed that a significant amount of $10 million had already been paid to the company, prompting his actions to safeguard the remainder for the nation. He filed the petition on July 22, 2024, and shared documentary evidence of the transaction on social media.

In response to the petition, the Special Prosecutor assured that Mr. Ablakwa would be contacted for further assistance if necessary. The investigation into the alleged $34.9 million procurement deal is now underway, following the submission of the petition.
