Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, the running mate to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, has unveiled the party’s 24-hour economy policy as a groundbreaking proposal aimed at fostering inclusivity across various sectors of society.
During a policy dialogue session with female journalists from both public and private media outlets, Professor Opoku-Agyemang emphasized the importance of transforming the economic roles of women through strategic policies and programs. She highlighted the significance of providing women, in particular, with the flexibility to pursue their careers while balancing their domestic responsibilities.
The running mate reiterated the NDC’s commitment to creating a people-centered manifesto that reflects the aspirations of Ghanaians. She commended female journalists for their invaluable contributions to nation-building and urged them to share stories that highlight the achievements of women who have broken barriers in their respective fields.
Former Minister of State, Nana Oye Bampoe, described the meeting as historic and underscored the importance of recognizing the pivotal role of female journalists in society. Additionally, veteran journalist and gender advocate, Dr. Charity Binka, called for the prioritization of gender policies in media houses to address issues of sexual harassment and support the advancement of female journalists to leadership positions.
The absence of gender-sensitive policies in the media industry was noted as a hindrance to the progress of women in the field. Dr. Binka emphasized that promoting women’s representation in decision-making roles not only narrows the gender gap but also enriches policies with diverse perspectives.
The engagement with female journalists highlighted the NDC’s commitment to championing gender equality and empowerment in its manifesto for the upcoming election.
By soliciting input from various professional and citizen groups, the party aims to address the diverse needs and aspirations of the Ghanaian population.
