An inquest heard that the young soldier who was discovered hanging in the shower seemed “normal” to her loved ones.
Prior to taking her own life, Sophie Madden of Wigan, Lancashire, had been out with friends and talked on the phone with her sister.
When the 23-year-old returned to the barracks at the British Army Training Center in Folkestone, Kent, coworkers noticed him moving toward the shower block.
But because the mother of one frequently washed before bed, this was not thought to be odd.
Around 9.30 the following morning, a coworker noticed her possessions sitting on a bench outside of her chosen cubicle.
When the soldier noticed Sophie’s legs hiding behind the door, he sounded the alarm. They discovered she had hanged herself when they opened the cubicle door.
She was rumored to have self-harmed in the past and to have had a “tough upbringing,” according to coworkers.
There was “no indication,” however, that the army gunner had suicidal thoughts or meant to commit suicide, according to an inquest held in County Hall, Maidstone.
