Angola coach, Pedro Goncalves, has issued a word of caution as his team prepares for the 2025 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying series. Sudan, who have been drawn in Group F alongside Ghana and Niger, are not to be underestimated.
Despite expressing confidence in his own team’s ability to secure qualification for the AFCON tournament, Goncalves highlighted Sudan’s impressive performance in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers as a reason for respect. Sudan, currently leading their World Cup qualifiers group ahead of Senegal, have also previously been crowned champions of Africa.
While acknowledging Ghana as the favorites in the group, Goncalves emphasized the need to show respect to both Sudan and Niger. He believes that all the national teams in the group have a chance to qualify, making it a balanced and competitive field.
Under the leadership of former Ghana coach Kwesi Appiah, Sudan has made an impressive start to the World Cup qualifiers, topping their group with 10 points from four matches. As the opening games of the AFCON qualifiers approach, Angola will face Ghana at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi on September 2, while Niger will take on Sudan.
