Despite recent power outages that have affected some areas of Ghana, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo emphasized his accomplishments in guaranteeing a dependable power supply for the country’s citizens.

During the financial crisis, the President denied reports of sporadic power outages in his State of the Nation Address (SONA) on February 27, 2024. He claimed that the nation has not seen the phenomenon known as DUMSOR in the previous seven years.

The President stated during his State of the Nation Address (SONA) on February 27, 2024, that his administration has kept the lights on for the previous seven years, despite the economic downturn.

“Mr. Speaker, nothing was more depressing than the phenomenon known as DUMSOR between 2012 and the beginning of 2017.” It was a sign of a broken system and sent shockwaves through the business and household community.

Following that incident, my government resolved that DUMSOR would not be imposed on Ghana and its citizens while the NPP was in power. I’m happy to report that, by far and away, we have been able to maintain power over the past seven (7) years, even during a financial crisis. We have exercised discipline and expertise in managing the energy sector to prevent a recurrence of the suffering that befell Ghanaians a few years ago.

Additionally, he said that the debt they inherited from the energy sector has been greatly reduced.

Furthermore, we have significantly decreased the energy sector debt we inherited thanks to tenacious, skillful negotiation.
