Former New Patriotic Party (NPP) deputy general secretary Nana Obiri Boahen shared his thoughts on the possibility of Mahamudu Bawumia’s running mate in the 2024 presidential contest being Apostle Dr. Opoku Onyinah, a former chairman of the Church of Pentecost.
Obiri Boahen listed the characteristics he thinks make Apostle Dr. Opoku Onyinah a good fit for the role in an interview with Neat FM, a radio station based in Accra.
“Opoku Onyinah possesses formal academic credentials. He is mature in politics, humble in interpersonal relationships, and all three.
“Then, it’s crucial to remember that when engaging in politics in Africa, certain factors cannot be ignored, religion, ethnicity and other considerations. People used to claim that the NPP doesn’t like Muslims and northerners.
“now, people are suggesting that his running mate should be an Akan Christian person. This would satisfy both Muslims and Christians,” he said.
The NPP man contended that by choosing Onyinah, Dr. Bawumia could foster unity within the party and dispel rumors about its position on religious and ethnic diversity.
“What will happen, then, if Bawumia pursues Onyinah? Onyinah is an Akan and a Pentecostal, while Bawumia is a Muslim. Thus, I don’t see anything wrong with Bawumia choosing to pursue Onyinah,” he continued.
