With Ghana’s upcoming elections drawing closer, a recent survey has shed light on the political landscape, showing the National Democratic Congress (NDC) leading in popularity among voters.

According to the survey conducted by political analyst Professor Smart Sarpong, the NDC currently holds 38.8% of the votes, closely followed by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) with 34.5%.

Professor Smart Sarpong’s baseline report covered all 275 constituencies in the country, with a sample size of 59,547 selected proportionally based on the 2020 voter register.

The survey, carried out in April 2024 across all 16 regions of Ghana, reveals that a significant 23.1% of voters remain undecided, making them a decisive factor in the final outcome. Smaller parties collectively hold a marginal 3.6% of voter support.

When it comes to preferred presidential candidates, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of the NPP leads with 38.9% support, closely followed by the NDC’s John Dramani Mahama at 36.1%. Undecided voters constitute 21.4%, with other candidates collectively accounting for 3.6%.

The survey also delved into the main factors influencing voter decisions. Competence emerged as the top consideration for 50.3% of respondents, followed by the track records of presidential candidates at 22.5%. Party affiliation was crucial for 19.1% of voters, while 3.7% admitted that financial inducements could sway their vote.

Unemployment was identified as the most pressing issue by 21.1% of voters, with economic improvements also ranking high on the agenda as a concern for a cumulative 33.7% of respondents.

Other critical issues highlighted by respondents include poor infrastructure, illegal mining, LGBTQ rights, corruption, and poor sanitation.
