16 teachers have been arrested across the country for violating the rules of the ongoing Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE). The West African Examination Council (WAEC) implemented new regulations for the examination, including banning supervisors from bringing mobile phones to the examination centers.
Some invigilators have been caught violating these rules, while others attempted to answer questions for the candidates. WAEC’s Head of Public Affairs, John Kapi, stated that these actions hinder the Council from accurately assessing the candidates’ potential.
The arrested teachers are facing legal consequences as a deterrent to others engaging in similar acts. According to Mr. Kapi, these individuals will no longer be allowed to supervise any WAEC examination.
In the Ashanti region, the Regional Head of WAEC, Divine Worlanyo Agbonyo, noted instances of teachers and parents trying to provide students with answers. One teacher even charged GH₵6,000 to assist in giving answers to students. However, these individuals were apprehended and prohibited from examination centers.
These actions highlight the importance of upholding the integrity of examinations and the consequences that come with malpractice. WAEC is committed to ensuring fair and transparent assessments for all candidates.
