Carlos Queiroz, the manager of Iran’s national football team, has supported his players’ right to boycott the 2022 World Cup in Qatar in protest of the political climate back home. As long as they abide by the restrictions established by Qatar, which is hosting this year’s competition despite criticism for its own human rights violations, Queiroz claims his players are free to express themselves however they like.
Queiroz has had success at the senior and club levels, mostly as Alex Ferguson’s assistant manager. He has won a number of awards for his work as a coach at the junior level. He wrote the Q-Report, which outlined strategies for improving American football player development, in 1998.
With nearly eight years under his belt between 2011 and 2019, Queiroz is the Iran national team’s longest-tenured manager. He is the only coach in the nation’s history to guide the team to two straight World Cups.
