2022 FIFA World Cup: Who is the coach for England?

Gareth Southgate OBE (born 3 September 1970) is a retired English professional football manager and former defender and midfielder. He has been the England national team manager since 2016.

Southgate returned to football management after four years away, signing a three-year contract to succeed Stuart Pearce as manager of England’s under-21 squad on August 22, 2013. In the interim period preceding Southgate’s hiring, senior team manager Roy Hodgson oversaw the side’s 6-0 triumph over Scotland. In his first game as manager, The Young Lions defeated Moldova 1-0 in a UEFA European Championship qualifying match, due to a goal by striker Saido Berahino.

Southgate guided England to World Cup qualification in November 2021 with a 10-0 win against San Marino. A week later, he signed a new deal that will keep him as England manager until December 2024. Southgate will lead England into the UEFA Nations League in June 2022. England did not win any of their first four games in the competition, including a 4-0 loss to Hungary on June 14, 2022. This was the country’s worst defeat at home since 1928. England were demoted to League B on September 23, 2022, following a 1-0 defeat to Italy.
