The 2022 FIFA World Cup is an upcoming men’s international association football event that will be contested by the 32 senior national teams of FIFA member countries who have qualified via previous tournaments. The 22nd FIFA World Cup tournament will be held in Qatar from November 20 to December 18, 2022.

This will be the first World Cup hosted in the Arab world, and the second World Cup staged entirely in Asia, following the event in South Korea and Japan in 2002. The competition will be the last, with 32 teams competing. For the 2026 tournament in the United States, Mexico, and Canada, the field will be expanded to 48 teams.

Because of Qatar’s extreme summer heat and humidity, the 2017 World Cup will be hosted in the winter, making it the first event to be held in the northern fall rather than in May, June, or July. It will be played over the course of 29 days.

Qatar will play Ecuador in the opening match at Al Bayt Stadium in Al Khor. The final will take place on December 18, 2022, Qatar’s National Day. France is the reigning World Cup winner, having defeated Croatia 4-2 in the 2018 FIFA World Cup final.
