15 things Ghananaian politicians do for votes

They won’t get on the ground to do the dirty jobs when they are in power, but when it comes to soliciting votes, Ghanaian politicians would do everything feasible. Funny enough, they do such things in public to get the attention of the media and voters.

From attending funerals to cleaning gutters, visiting disaster victims to authorities, Ghanaian politicians will do anything doable to attain or retain power.

As the 2016 November poll approaches, Ghanafuo.com takes a look at some of the 15 funny yet memorable things Ghanaian politicians have done just to attract votes.

1. Alan Cash promises NPP delegates bicycles, phones and money

The former flagbearer aspirant of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Alan Kyeremanten aka Alan cash once promised the New Patriotic Party delegates in the Volta Region in 2014 that if they elect him as flagbearer of the party, he would give them bicycles and other goodies. You can it clearly the purpose of his promise.

2. Edward Mahama promises free chicken thigh for school children

Yes! The PNC Presidential candidate Dr. Edward Mahama actually said this. He promised in May 2016 that school children will get free chicken thigh for lunch if he wins the November 2016 poll.

3. Nduom’s Tundra to Akua Donkor

The GFP flagbearer and founder, Akua Donkor was given a Toyota Tundra Truck by PPP founder, Dr Papa Kwesi Nduom for campaign but when she failed to give them votes, it was retrieved by the PPP.

4. Asabee branded rice “Takeaway”

Asamoah Boateng aka Asabee gave branded rice “Takeaway” for NPP delegates at elections and still lost.

5. Mahama branded laptops

In 2013 President Mahama distributed free 40,000 branded laptop computers to second cycle institutions. You got the move lol!

6. Nana Addo plays cards with voters

Just this year (2016), NPP presidential candidate shared photos playing cards with voters. He was just playing cards with them lol.

7. Mahama—the shoe maker

In June 2015, President John Mahama distributed 10,000 pairs of made-in-Ghana sandals to the Ghana Education Service (GES) under his free school sandals programme. In fact, the man himself was seen wearing those shoes for the kids. Jesus is in town right???

8. Mahama gives Akufo-Addo’s Kyebi water

Mahama didn’t find any place in Ghana lacking water than the hometown of his archrival, Nana Akufo-Addo. In March 2014, President John Mahama went to the maternal hometown of Nana Akufo-Addo, Kyebi to inaugurate a newly completed water treatment plant for the people of the area. SMH!

9. Free over-sized uniforms by late Prez Mills

In 2009, late President John Evans Atta Mills and his government budgeted GH¢200 million cedis for the manufacturing of 1.6 million uniforms which was supposed to be distributed to poor pupils, for the 2009 and 2010 academic year. The sizes of those uniforms were another wahala we will discuss some other time.

10. Akufo Addo’s free Senior High School education

As part of his bid to win the people’s heart in 2012 election, Nana Akufo-Addo launched a free SHS education but only God knows why and how they lost the election after all this promise. The NDC are now taking it serious and working on it day-by-day. What a smart move!

11. Mahama cleaning gutters

Mahama has been known for initiating National Sanitation Day so what else do you expect. Let’s conquer the gutters for votes baby!

12. President Mills buys kenkey

Somewhere in 2012 during his reign, late President Atta Mills stormed the Nima Market in Accra to know how expensive kenkey was. Epic, I guess!

Another good strategy. Getting close to the people has been the dream of Nana Addo and he is not stopping as he grabs some balls of kenkey to share with voters.

The almighty former President Jerry John Rawlings set the pace for most of the presidents. Cleaning gutters wasn’t the issue during his reign. Big ups!
