Dr. Richard Anthony, the Medical Director of Tema General Hospital, has voiced grave concerns regarding the number of patients who arrive at the hospital already dead.

He stated that in 2023, a total of 1,079 people 621 men and 458 women were taken to Tema General Hospital dead upon arrival.

Given the growing magnitude of this problem, Dr. Anthony emphasized during the Tema Metropolitan Health Directorate’s annual performance assessment how urgent it is to address it.

He underlined how concerning this trend is, pointing out that it has significantly increased from the 882 in 2022 statistic from the previous year. He also pointed out that the vast majority of these incidents were members of the working class.

“We recorded a worrying trend of several people being brought in dead on arrival; it is alarming,” he stressed.

Dr. Anthony recommended the public to report any health concerns to the closest medical facilities as soon as possible and stated that the hospital was investigating the potential causes of the trends.

He also said that sick patients who might experience problems after being released from the hospital should go back there right away rather than trying to get better at home.

The hospital provided the Ghana News Agency (GNA) with statistics showing that the top 10 certified causes of death in 2023 were cardiovascular illnesses, hypertensive complications, cerebrovascular disorders, and diabetic complications.

Acute respiratory distress, severe sepsis, pneumonia, renal disorders, liver diseases, and hypovolaemic shock were the additional conditions.
