Derek Carr was born in Fresno, California, in 1991, and lived in Bakersfield until 2002. His family subsequently moved to Sugar Land, Texas, after his older brother David was selected first overall by the Houston Texans in the NFL Draft.
He ultimately chose to play for Fresno State, his older brother’s alma mater, despite having offers from other major football programs. He began playing quarterback for Fresno State as a redshirt sophomore, and at the conclusion of his senior year, he finished ninth in the Heisman Trophy vote.
In the 2014 NFL Draft, the Oakland Raiders selected him with the 36th overall pick. His whole playing career has been spent with the Raiders team, which relocated to Las Vegas before the 2022 campaign.
