The passing of Welsh rugby legend Barry John in February this year left fans mourning the loss of one of the sport’s greats. Known as “The King”, John had an exceptional career, playing for Cardiff, Wales, and the British Lions before retiring at the young age of 27.

John, who left behind an estate worth £134,000, had a single-page will in which he left each of his eleven grandchildren a legacy of £100. The rest of his estate was to be shared among his children Kate O’Cock, Lucy Powell, Anna Graham, and David John. Despite later separating from his wife Janet, whom he married in 1969, John passed away surrounded by his family at the University Hospital of Wales.

Throughout his career, John was described as the “first rugby pop star” and gained fame beyond the rugby field. He came third in the BBC Sports Personality ranking behind Princess Anne and George Best and even appeared on the TV show This is Your Life. John, however, struggled with the attention and retired from the sport he loved.

The Lions paid tribute to John on their official website, calling him “truly one of the greatest.” Cardiff also praised his contributions to the game, emphasizing his partnership with Sir Gareth and his iconic status in the Blue and Black team.

Barry John’s legacy in Welsh rugby will forever be remembered, and his impact on the sport will continue to inspire generations to come.
