According to a report in the Independent, a collection of shoes worn by basketball legend Michael Jordan during six NBA Championships sold for an unprecedented $8 million at an auction in New York.
The six special trainers that Michael Jordan wore throughout his six NBA championship wins with the Chicago Bulls in the 1990s were up for auction as part of Sotheby’s “The Dynasty Collection.”
On February 2, the auction house said that the total amount of $8,032,800 that was sold for the set of game-worn footwear set a new global record.
The Air Jordan VI (1991), VII (1992), VIII (1993), XI (1996), XII (1997), and XIV (1998) models were among the winning pairs. Michael Jordan has signed each pair of sneakers.
Included in the transaction was a limited edition autographed photo of the basketball player with a trophy during four championship games. Following the NBA Finals in 1992, 1993, 1996, and 1998, Bill Smith captured the photos.
In the past, the famous basketball player’s memorabilia sold for a record sum. He still holds the record for the most costly piece of game-used sports memorabilia.
In 2022, a Sotheby’s auction resulted in the sale of Mr. Jordan’s Chicago Bulls jersey, which he wore at the 1998 NBA Finals opening game, for $10.1 million.
A pair of sneakers that the basketball player had worn in the past went up for $2.2 million at an auction in April of last year. The signed trainers were expected to bring between $2 and $4 million at the Sotheby’s auction.
The legendary basketball player, en route to winning his sixth and last NBA championship, donned the “Bred” Air Jordan 13s in Game 2 of the 1998 NBA Finals.
