In reaction to the Ghana FA’s announcement regarding Manchester United rookie Kobbie Mainoo, Gareth Southgate appears to have responded.
Even after making his Premier League debut in November 2023 against Everton, Mainoo, 18, has become a star for United this season.
This season, he has started nine league games for Erik ten Hag’s team. Last week, he scored a vital late goal against Wolves.
Even though the 18-year-old was playing for The Three Lions in their youth division, it was claimed following that victory that the Ghana FA was trying to recruit Mainoo from England.
A member of the Ghana Football Association’s executive council named Randy Abbey told The Times, “The Ghana Football Association is interested in monitoring, attracting, and persuading all eligible talents for its various national teams.”
“Kobbie is undeniably gifted, and the Association is excited to collaborate with him and many others both domestically and internationally.”
Although Mainoo’s parents are from Ghana and the adolescent travels there frequently, England manager Gareth Southgate doesn’t seem to be willing to take a chance on losing the young player.
For England’s upcoming international matches next month, Southgate may consider calling up Mainoo, according to Graeme Bailey.
After checking up on Mainoo, the Three Lions manager and his coaching staff are “seriously considering” adding him to the team for their upcoming matches against Brazil and Belgium in late March.
In November of last year, Mainoo captained the team for their match against Japan, marking six appearances for the England U19s.
