Summer Lee, a Congressional candidate, defeated Steve Irwin in the hotly contested 12th Congressional District on Wednesday.
What is Summer Lee running for?
But Lee conceded that votes in the razor-thin contest are still being tabulated votes that county authorities warned would take days to record and Irwin refused to surrender.
Lee said her victory represented the culmination of a five-year movement “that centers each and every one of us, that we could get rid of the politics of old that says that Black people and brown people and women and progressives and young people and workers and unions don’t belong here” in a speech around 12:30 a.m. Wednesday.
As of 12:14 a.m. Wednesday, Lee led Irwin by 4,142 votes in Allegheny County, while Irwin led Lee by 3,696 votes in the portions of Westmoreland County that also make up the 12th District.
That gave Lee an edge of less than 500 votes.
However, Allegheny County officials reported that 31 precincts failed to submit memory sticks with vote totals.
Who is running against Summer Lee?
Irwin, who was competing against Summer Lee, also mentioned that votes are still being counted, but that he believes he will be able to declare victory once they are.
