Major League Baseball suspended Baltimore Orioles pitcher Matt Harvey for 60 games on Tuesday for supplying a prohibited drug of abuse, a punishment coming from his admission of delivering opioids to a teammate who died of an overdose.
What happened to Matt Harvey?
In February, during a federal trial in Texas stemming from the murder of Los Angeles Angels pitcher Tyler Skaggs, the former New York Mets star admitted to using cocaine in New York and California.
Harvey, a 33-year-old right-hander, signed a minor league contract with the Orioles last month that included a $150,000. minor league salary, a $1 million major league salary, and a $500,000 assignment fee if transferred while on a major league contract.
He has not pitched in any games while working out at Baltimore’s extended spring training facilities.
The suspension is in effect since April 29.
Minor league games will count toward the suspension under an agreement between MLB and the players’ group, according to a source familiar with the clause who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the deal was not made public.
