Kokkinakis was born to Greek immigrant parents in Adelaide. His parents are Trevor (Tryfon) from Kalamata, Greece, and Voula (Paraskevi) from Tripoli, Greece.
He attended Scotch College in Adelaide and also holds Greek citizenship and is a citizen of Perivolakia Pylos.
His rankings have reached as high as No. 69 in singles by the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP), which he first achieved on 8 June 2015. He produced his best Major singles performance at the 2015 French Open by reaching the third round. He has also won one ATP Tour title in singles.
