In 1962, Ricky Gardiner formed his first band, the Vostok, while still in high school. The Kingbees and the System followed, and in 1969 he created Beggars Opera with them.

He performed in his own band, Beggars Opera, as well as with pals David Bowie and Iggy Pop. On David Bowie’s 1977 album Low, he performed lead guitar.  The same year, he collaborated on Pop’s album Lust for Life, which includes The Passenger, widely recognized as one of Pop’s finest songs for which Gardiner created the music.

He was 73.

Gardiner said he had electromagnetic hypersensitivity, which he felt he acquired from being exposed to high amounts of computer radiation and magnetic fields.
