Following its auction on Monday(May 9) for $170 million dollars-plus fees, Warhol’s 1964 silk-screen image of Marilyn Monroe, created two years after the film star’s death, has become the most expensive piece of the 21st-century art ever sold.
The previous record was set seven years ago when a Picasso painting titled Les Femmes d’Alger was auctioned at a whopping $179.4 million.
Monroe appeared in several movies, including (Some Like It Hot and Gentlemen Prefer Blondes). She was hailed as a sex symbol and fashion icon before dying of an overdose of unknown drugs in her apartment decades ago at the age of 36.
