With his landmark 1972 independent comic, Binky Brown Meets the Holy Virgin Mary, Green effectively invented the American autobiographical comic book, which directly inspired Green’s friend, Art Spiegelman, to create Maus. Green died at the age of 76.

Green, who was born in 1946 and raised in Chicago as a Catholic, rejected the faith when he was 13 because he believed it gave him compulsive neuroses.

In the late 1960s, Green was studying painting at the Rhode Island School of Design when he was first exposed to the then-nascent world of underground comix, specifically Robert Crumb’s work.
