Jamie Wallis, a Conservative member of parliament, became the first British legislator to openly reveal that they were transgender, drawing praise from colleagues and Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

The MP’s declaration came on Wednesday March 30, amid a tumultuous discussion in British politics and society regarding transgender rights and gender identity.
Members of parliament from both parties have expressed their support for the bill.

After a meeting of all Conservative MPs the following Tuesday night, Wallis decided to speak out.
According to the Independent, Johnson greeted his colleagues with a remark regarding the transgender debate, which has engulfed the main opposition Labour Party.

Feminists, on the other hand, have criticized him for erasing women’s rights.
In 2020, the UK government stated that it did not support enabling people to alter their gender without a medical diagnosis.
Last month, Jamie Wallis revealed that he suffers from gender dysphoria and has been assaulted and blackmailed.
Other young people suffering with gender identity, he added, should take their time understanding themselves and “don’t feel rushed to pick up a label or see it in any manner.”
