A university student in Nigeria died on Friday while taking part in a crucifixion reenactment.

According to the BBC, Sule Ambrose, 25, was a first-year student at the Claratian Institute of Philosophy and was studying to become a priest when the tragic incident occurred.

During the play “Passion of Christ,” Ambrose was cast in the role of Simon Peter, a disciple of Jesus, in a reenactment of Jesus’ crucifixion.

According to Vanguard, a Nigerian news agency, people at the institution assumed Ambrose was joking when he fainted, thinking it was part of the farce.

“At first, we thought it was a joke and that it was all part of the drama,” the person explained. “But when he couldn’t get up, we realized it was a serious matter and he was rushed to the hospital.”

According to the story, administrators at the university have halted all Easter events as a result of the incident.

The school lies in the southeastern part of Nigeria.
