According to recordings of the April 4 event, a Black man face-down on the ground was fatally shot in the back of the head by a Michigan police officer, the violent culmination to a traffic stop, brief foot chase, and battle over a stun gun.
Patrick Lyoya, 26, was shot and died outside a Grand Rapids home. The white cop repeatedly told Lyoya to let go of his Taser, yelling, Drop the Taser! at one point.
The city’s new police chief, Eric Winstrom, published four videos on Wednesday, including vital footage of the incident captured by a passenger in Lyoya’s car on that wet morning, citing a need for transparency.
Lyoya is shown on video fleeing from the police who pulled him over for driving with a plate that didn’t belong to the vehicle. They fought in front of a few houses, and Lyoya’s passenger got out to watch.
The tussle over the Taser, according to Winstrom, lasted around 90 seconds.
The officer was on top of Lyoya in the final moments, kneeling on his back at times to subdue him.
