
Harry Billinge, a D-day veteran who was one of the first British soldiers to arrive on Gold Beach in 1944 at the age of 18, has died at the age of 96.
Billinge, a sapper with the 44 Royal Engineer Commandos, was one of just four soldiers from his 10-man unit to survive the landings and fights in France, later fighting in Caen and the Falaise pocket in Normandy.
He moved to Cornwall and raised more than £50,000 for veterans, including a national memorial to his dead friends.
In 2019, he was granted the MBE for philanthropic fundraising, as well as the Légion d’honneur, France’s highest honor.

But the family said he died after a short illness.
