Electronic music artists are frequently depicted as remote, aloof characters, which is occasionally done on purpose. Chantal Passamonte’s creative pseudonym Mira Calix, who died last weekend at the age of 51, was the polar opposite of that.

Her art, which included sound installations that were seen by hundreds of thousands, soundtracks, scores, and sculptures, as well as studio albums and other collaborations, was as warm, giving, and humanistic as she was.

Calix was born in Durban, South Africa, in 1970 and migrated to the United Kingdom in 1991, where he became a key figure in the fledgling Sheffield electronic label Warp Records.

Before becoming a DJ and subsequently a fascinating experimental composer, she co-compiled two of the label’s early agenda-setting collections (1995’s Blech and 1996’s Blechsdöttir, the latter called by Calix in tribute to one of her heroines, Björk).
