
Stephen Shalom, a leader of the Sephardic Jewish community in the United States who advocated for Middle East peace and religious tolerance, passed away at the age of 93.
Shalom died on Sunday, according to his relatives.
Shalom, currently known as New York Accessory Group, was the heir to a handkerchief manufacturing empire and was a leader of significant Jewish and pro-Israel philanthropies at various points in his life.
He was also associated with the American Jewish Committee, the Jewish Agency, and the Joint Distribution Committee, as well as HIAS, a Jewish immigration advocacy group.
He regretted and despised the image that Jews of Middle Eastern and Sephardic heritage were belligerent and intolerant of Arabs, and he was born in Brooklyn to parents who had come from Aleppo.
