
Eugene Melnyk, the owner of the Ottawa Senators, died Monday night after a long illness, according to the franchise. He was 62 years old at the time.
Melnyk’s death was confirmed by a statement from his family, which referenced “an disease he battled with determination and fortitude.”
The ailment was not specified in the statement, and a query seeking more information from a team spokeswoman was not immediately returned.
After a public search for a donor, Melnyk had a liver transplant in 2015. He had owned the Senators since 2003, when he paid $92 million for the NHL team.
The Toronto native was also involved in other enterprises across Canada, and his net worth was reported to be $1.21 billion in 2010.
