According to two sources familiar with the matter, the Washington Nationals made their largest move of the offseason Sunday night, agreeing to a one-year agreement with Nelson Cruz worth $15 million guaranteed.
The contract won’t be finalized until all of the specifics are ironed out and Cruz passes a physical examination.
But, less than 12 hours after announcing his intention to sign a seasoned power hitter, General Manager Mike Rizzo filled that void with the 41-year-old designated hitter.
Cruz is coming off an all-star season with the Twins and Rays, in which he hit 32 home runs in 584 plate appearances.
Since the start of the 2014 season, he has hit the most home runs of any player.
With the Nationals, he could provide consistent output as well as a significant trade piece if they decide to sell again this summer.
The addition strengthens them going into the season while also providing a glimpse into the future.
