Famous American football referee Johnny Grier has sadly passed away after decades of serving the National Football League (NFL). He died on Wednesday, March 9, 2022, aged 74.
Grier served as a National Football League referee for 23 years. He officiated from 1981 to 2004.
He began in the NFL as a field judge. He went on to become the first African-American referee in the history of the NFL with the start of the 1988 NFL season.
The native of North Carolina started his officiating career in high school football at 18 years old. He moved on to college football in 1972.
He also served as the director of officiating for the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, during his successful and historic NFL officiating career.
