EC is not responsible for security – Jean Mensa

The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has clarified that it is not responsible for security during elections. Chairperson Jean Adukwei Mensa made this statement while briefing Parliament ahead of the 2024 election.

Mensa emphasized that the EC’s role is limited to election-related activities and that the security and safety of voters and property are the responsibility of the National Election Security Task Force, led by the Inspector General of Police. She stated, “It is important to note that while we are involved with the Election Security Task Force at the national, regional, and district levels, the Electoral Commission is not responsible for security.”

The EC collaborates with the security agencies by providing details of election centres and printing arrangements to ensure the protection of ballots, especially during transportation to the regions. Mensa added, “Beyond this, the police are co-responsible for security before, during, and after elections, and they make all security decisions independently of the Electoral Commission.”

It is crucial for all citizens to understand the division of responsibilities between the EC and the security agencies to ensure the smooth and safe conduct of elections in Ghana.
