In an exhilarating showdown at the Accra Sports Stadium, Asante Kotoko claimed victory in the inaugural Democracy Cup, overcoming their rivals Hearts of Oak and earning the opportunity to face Major League Soccer’s DC United in the United States.

Under the leadership of head coach Prosper Narteh Ogum, Kotoko showcased a dynamic lineup featuring several new additions. The team started strong, controlling the game and creating numerous scoring chances. A penalty kick in the 30th minute broke the deadlock, as experienced midfielder Justice Blay coolly converted to give Kotoko the lead.

Despite a valiant effort from Hearts of Oak in the second half, they managed to equalize just five minutes into the half with a controversial header from new signing Asamoah Boateng Afriyie, which resulted in goalkeeper Frederick Asare requiring medical attention.

In a tense conclusion to the match, Kotoko ultimately emerged triumphant, with Peter Amidu netting a magnificent goal to secure the Democracy Cup championship. As a reward for their victory, Kotoko will journey to Washington D.C. to face DC United later this year.
