The Vacaville Police Department is in mourning after the tragic loss of Officer Matthew Bowen in a freak incident on Thursday.
Officer Bowen, who had been with the department since June 2023, was conducting a routine exercise in Solano County, Northern California when the incident occurred.
Officer Bowen, a dedicated police officer who had previously served at the Concord Police Department, leaves behind a wife, two sons, parents, and a brother. The Department expressed their deep sorrow at the loss, stating that Officer Bowen had served with the highest level of dedication and honor.
State Senator Bill Dodd paid tribute to Officer Bowen, saying that he had devoted his life to keeping the community safe. City of Vacaville Mayor John Carli also praised Officer Bowen, stating that he exemplified the best qualities of their community – service before self, honor, duty, and country.
The fatal incident occurred when Officer Bowen was struck by a driver suspected to be under the influence of drugs while conducting a traffic stop on his motorbike. Despite being rushed to Kaiser Hospital, Officer Bowen tragically passed away as a result of his injuries.
The driver of the vehicle, identified as Serena C.J. Rodriguez, 24, from Auburn, attempted to flee the scene but was detained by bystanders. Rodriguez has been sent to Solano County Jail and is facing charges of homicide and driving under the influence causing injury and/or death.
A police procession was held for Officer Bowen in the afternoon, with a somber scene showing the contingent parading down Interstate 80 in his honor.
