Gay sex contributing significantly to spread of HIV in Ghana – AIDS Commission

The Ghana AIDS Commission has raised concerns over the low use of condoms among sexually active individuals, citing a surge in HIV infections.

In 2023, Ghana recorded seventeen thousand new cases of HIV and twelve thousand related deaths, indicating a worrying trend.

Programmes Manager of the National AIDS Control Programme, Dr Stephen Ayisi Addo, attributed the rise in HIV infections to factors like gay sex, emphasizing the high-risk nature of this behavior. He noted that surveys revealed an increasing rate of HIV transmission among men who have sex with men, with a significant portion also engaging in bisexual activities.

Dr Addo highlighted the role of these groups as “bridging populations,” facilitating the spread of HIV to the broader community. He stressed the importance of education on the use of condoms and prevention methods, noting that there is a low awareness of these measures among the youth.

Despite advancements in HIV treatment and prevention, Dr Addo emphasized that complacency could lead to a resurgence of the virus. He urged the public to remain vigilant and informed about the risks of HIV transmission, emphasizing the need for continued efforts to combat the disease.

The Ghana AIDS Commission’s call for increased awareness and condom use serves as a reminder of the ongoing threat of HIV in the country.

As the fight against HIV continues, it is essential for all individuals to take proactive steps to protect themselves and their communities from the virus.
