Built in 1910, Rickwood Field is the oldest professional baseball park in the United States. Over the years, the stadium has seen numerous renovations to keep up with the changing times.
On June 20, 2024, a special game is set to take place at Rickwood Field between the San Francisco Giants and the St. Louis Cardinals. The match is dedicated to the memory of late Giants center fielder Willie Mays, who passed away at the age of 93 on June 18 of the same year.
Willie Mays was a standout player who started his career with the Birmingham Black Barons of the Negro American League before moving on to the historic Giants franchise. His impact on the game of baseball has inspired generations of players and fans alike.
Although Mays was unable to attend the tribute game in person, he expressed his gratitude to Major League Baseball, the Giants, the Cardinals, and all the fans who would be in attendance or watching from home.
He emphasized the importance of honoring the Negro League ballplayers and his former teammates on the Black Barons.
The Giants vs. Cardinals game at Rickwood Field is scheduled to start at 7:15 pm and will be broadcast on Fox.
Additionally, fans can stream the game on Fubo and the MLB’s official website.
