The football world was left in shock today after the tragic passing of Matija Sarkic, the former Millwall star, in Montenegro. Matija’s twin brother, Oliver, took to Instagram to share a heartbreaking photo in memory of his beloved sibling.
Both Matija and Oliver were born in Grimsby and attended the British School of Brussels while following their father to Belgium for work. The brothers both started their football careers at Anderlecht’s academy and represented Montenegro’s Under-21 team.
While Matija went on to join Aston Villa in 2015, Oliver signed with Benfica before making his way to Leeds United and eventually moving to Burton Albion. Oliver has since played for various clubs, including Blackpool and Mansfield, before joining Uzbekistani side Pakhtakor Tashkent and then Decic in Montenegro.
Matija had a successful career, earning nine caps for Montenegro and delivering a man-of-the-match performance against Belgium just last week. He also had stints at Millwall, Shrewsbury, Birmingham, Livingston, Stoke, Wigan, and Havant & Waterlooville.
The tragic news of Matija’s passing came while he was on international duty in Budva, Montenegro. It is reported that he fell ill and sadly passed away this morning after feeling unwell and seeking medical help.
