Former President John Dramani Mahama has called on churches to be vigilant and pay close attention to the political landscape leading up to the 2024 general elections in order to ensure that all stakeholders act in accordance with the right principles.

Speaking during a meeting with the Christian Ecumenical Council, Mr. Mahama emphasized the importance of the church playing an active role alongside the opposition party, NDC, in raising concerns about any questionable practices in the electoral process.

Highlighting his concerns, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress pointed out the appointment of politically affiliated individuals to key positions of trust, such as the Electoral Commission. He expressed worries about the neutrality and fairness of these individuals who have strong ties to specific political parties.

Mr. Mahama stated, “We want to wake up the conscience of the nation that the right thing must be done so that the outcome can actually be the will of the people. We will continue to play our part by raising red flags whenever necessary, and we believe that the church community should also be vigilant in ensuring that the right processes are followed.”

As Ghana prepares for the upcoming elections, it is essential for all stakeholders, including the church, to actively monitor proceedings and advocate for transparency and fairness in the electoral process.
