The life and murder of Reena Virk

Reena Virk was just 14 years old when her life was tragically cut short in a brutal murder that shook the community. Her story is now being told in Hulu’s gripping new series, Under The Bridge.

Reena, who went missing from Saanich in British Columbia, had a troubled relationship with her parents and lived in a foster home at the time of her death. She had run away from home multiple times and even falsely accused her father of sexual abuse in order to stay at a group home. Despite this, she eventually recanted the statement and remained in contact with her parents.

On November 14, 1997, Reena attended a party under the Gorge Waterway bridge, where she was confronted by her friend Nicole Cook about spreading rumors. The situation escalated when Cook put a cigarette out on Reena’s forehead, leading to a group of teens attacking her. Reena managed to escape, but was followed by Kelly Ellard and Warren Glowatski, who ultimately drowned her in the water.

Both Ellard and Glowatski were convicted of Reena’s murder, with Glowatski claiming he only kicked her and Ellard held her underwater. Glowatski was sentenced to life in prison with no chance of parole for seven years, while Ellard received a similar sentence.

Despite the tragic outcome of Reena’s life, her story lives on in Hulu’s Under The Bridge, a series that delves into the events surrounding her murder. Starring a talented cast including Riley Keough, Lily Gladstone, and Vritika Gupta, the show is airing new episodes weekly and is set to conclude on May 29, 2024.

The series serves as a powerful reminder of the devastating consequences of violence and the importance of seeking justice for victims like Reena Virk.
