Asante Kotoko claimed their second victory in three games with a 2-0 win over Legon Cities at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium on Sunday.

The match, part of the 29th week of the 2023/24 Ghana Premier League, was not without controversy as both of Kotoko’s goals came under scrutiny.

Steven Mukwala opened the scoring for Asante Kotoko with a penalty in the 33rd minute. The decision to award the penalty was met with debate as the Legon Cities defender was deemed to have intentionally handled the ball on the goal line while falling, although replays did not provide a clear-cut view of the incident.

Five minutes into the second half, Yussif Mohammed Nurudeen added a scrappy second goal for Asante Kotoko, securing the 2-0 victory for the home side.

Following this result, Asante Kotoko climbed two places in the league table, now occupying the ninth position with 40 points. On the other hand, Legon Cities dropped from tenth to eleventh place with 38 points, swapping positions with Kotoko in the standings.

Despite the controversy surrounding the first goal, Asante Kotoko will take confidence from this win as they continue their push for a higher finish in the Ghana Premier League.
