La Liga and Atletico Madrid have come out strongly against the recent incident of racial abuse aimed at Spanish-Ghanaian footballer Nico Williams. The incident occurred during Athletic Club’s match against Atletico Madrid at the Wanda Metropolitano, which saw Atletico Madrid clinch a 3-1 victory.
The racial abuse directed at Williams by some Atletico Madrid fans has sparked widespread condemnation from both the club and the league. Atletico Madrid issued a statement reiterating their stance against racism and hatred, while La Liga emphasized that such behavior has no place in sports.
In a separate statement, La Liga stated, “La Liga vehemently condemns any racist acts and will continue working to eradicate this inexcusable behavior from our sport.”
Unfortunately, this is not the first time that racial abuse has been directed at players of darker complexions at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium. Atletico Madrid has previously faced criticism for mistreating players like Real Madrid’s Vinicius Jr., raising concerns about the efficacy of measures to combat racism in football.
