US Marine veteran Megan Leavey is being recognized for her exemplary service in Iraq as a canine handler, particularly for her special bond with a dog named Rex. Her story in the military has captured the attention of many, leading to a 2017 movie adaptation of her experiences.

Megan Leavey, born on October 28, 1983, in Valley Cottage, New York, is a veterinary surgical technician renowned for her bravery and dedication to her military duties.

Following the tragic events of 9/11, Megan enlisted in the US Marine Corps in August 2003, stating, “I just couldn’t sit on the sidelines as a spectator watching the fight for freedom unfold on television.” She joined the K-9 unit a year later and was deployed to Fallujah, Iraq, with Rex in May 2005.

In September 2006, Megan and Rex were both injured from an IED explosion while on patrol but thankfully survived.

Rex was badly injured and had to undergo treatment by a military veterinarian, while Megan was transported to a hospital in Baghdad. Following their recovery, the duo returned home for physical therapy.

Megan was honorably discharged from the Marines in December 2007, and in April 2012, she was granted permission to adopt Rex. Sadly, Rex passed away later that year from old age.

In addition to the movie adaptation of Megan and Rex’s story, the duo was honored with a dog park named Clarkstown K-9 Corrals in 2018 at the Congers Lake Memorial Park in New York.

As of April 2024, Megan Leavey is currently working as a veterinary surgical technician at Old Tappan Veterinary in New Jersey, a position she has held since June 2018. She continues to excel in her role, providing the best care for her patients and finding fulfillment in her work.
