The chairman of the Health Committee, Dr. Ayew Afriyie, has come under fire from the Minority in Parliament for allegedly purposefully impeding a parliamentary investigation of the government’s COVID-19 spending.
Alban Bagbin, the Speaker of Parliament, tasked the Finance and Health Committees with expeditiously investigating the use of COVID-19 money.
The Finance Minister reported on Wednesday, June 22, 2022, that there were alleged anomalies in the management of COVID-19 money, prompting the issuance of this directive.
Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, the Minority Leader, expressed his concerns on the floor of Parliament on Wednesday, February 21, alleging that the MP for Effiduase/Asokore was attempting to undermine the probe.
“Ayew Afriyie, the joint committee chairman, has not convened a meeting to discuss the issue. It goes without saying that only the chairman has the authority to convene a meeting; the ranking member is not permitted to do so. Therefore, we smell sabotage of some kind.
“This matter has been delayed for almost eight months, and we cannot continue like this,” the joint committee stated. “There was a subcommittee that the joint committee formed and developed a guideline, and submitted it to the joint committee, which it accepted.”
