Michael Essien deserves Black Stars coaching job – Ghana Premier League legend

Legend of the Ghana Premier League Charles Taylor has urged the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to select Michael Essien to lead the Black Stars as their new coach.

Following the resignation of Chris Hughton due to Ghana’s lackluster performance at the just-finished 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament in Ivory Coast, the country’s football governing body has not yet announced the appointment of a new head coach for the senior national side.

Taylor, who played for Ghana’s two largest clubs, said he had faith in Michael Essien.

He claimed that Essien and his teammates from the 2006 squad had to be recruited because Otto Addo, who had previously been given the opportunity, had not fulfilled his duty to his satisfaction.

“Nothing good will come from Otto Addo. He has coached the team before, and there is nothing positive you could pinpoint from his first stint,” he told Onua FM.

However several sources indicate that Otto Addo is in the lead to be the Black Stars coach once again.

“Does that mean we should consider all past coaches who qualified us for the World Cup?”, he quizzed.

He added that people with the expertise and skill to succeed in the position, like Michael Essien, Stephen Appiah, and Laryea Kingston, ought to be given the opportunity.

“We must know that the right people are available to revive Ghana football. I would suggest that we consider Michael Essien for the coaching job.

“Essien together with Stephen Appiah and Laryea Kingston are bold former players who will stand their ground and instill discipline in the playing body,” Taylor said.
